Improving voluntary return counselling to the Western Balkans

Study visit to Frankfurt/Main and Berlin

In the week from 20-24 November 2017, 70 representatives of organizations and institutions dealing with returnees and migrants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia attended a study trip to Germany. The group from Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia visited Frankfurt while the group from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina travelled to Berlin. The study trip was jointly organized by the Regional Project on Social Rights for Vulnerable Groups (SoRi) of GIZ and Internationaler Bund (IB).

The representatives visited a number of institutions and non-profit organizations and had the opportunity to learn more about the legal and social situation of migrants from Western Balkan countries in Germany. The study visit aimed at stimulating a first exchange of experiences and ideas of both sides with the long-term goal of establishing a simple but effective exchange format between organizations and institutions dealing with returnees from the respective countries.

For 2018 a counter-visit of the German partners in the Balkan countries is planned to advance the started process of establishing an exchange format, which is improving the service offers for returnees and will help them to better plan and proactively drive their homecoming.
